Sri Lanka truly has it all - Incredible nature, long sandy beaches, amazing food, unique hospitality. This is easily one of my favorite countries. I recently spent 6 weeks there and here are some tips I hope you will find useful! Let's dive in:
THE ROUTE:
Here is my recommended route to experience as much as possible of what this country has to offer for your first visit:
Negombo - Kandy* - Sigiriya* - Nuwara Eliya - Ella - Yala National Park - Hiriktiya - Mirissa* - Weligama* - Ahangama* - Galle - Hikkaduwa - Colombo * You can stay in one of the destinations and visit the next ones on the list on a day trip
Negombo
Start your trip in Negombo, a coastal city conveniently located near the international airport. It’s a great spot to relax after your flight and get a feel for Sri Lanka. Take a stroll along the beach, visit the bustling fish market, and enjoy some fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants. If you’re into history, the Dutch Fort and canal system are worth exploring. One day is enough as there are far more interesting destinations awaiting you.
Kandy
From Negombo, hire a driver to take you to Kandy and do not forget to stop on the way for a fresh coconut, some street food and also stop by the Millenium Elephant Foundation! I went with Asanka from Travel With Asanka and had the best experience. We also had a good time making TikToks about him and know everybody knows him as Coconut man 😄Watch the TikTok here. I recommend going with a guide/driver for the first week of your trip to cover as much as possible. They can check in to rooms close to where you are staying, and create special itineraries for your needs, like visiting nearby sights that are on the way.
Welcome to Kandy. This cultural hub is home to the iconic Temple of the Tooth Relic, one of the most sacred sites in Buddhism. Don’t miss a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens, where you can admire a wide variety of exotic plants and trees. In the evening, watch a traditional Kandyan dance performance to immerse yourself in local culture.
Sigiriya
A day trip from Kandy to Sigiriya is a must. Climb the famous Lion Rock for stunning views of the surrounding jungle and ancient ruins, or do as I did and climb Pidarangula Rock instead to get a view of Lions Rock. This is also the cheapest option by far! Nearby, explore the Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with intricate Buddhist murals and statues. Having a driver for this leg of the journey allows you to maximize your time and visit multiple attractions in one day. You can also visit a traditional village and do a cooking class, ask your guide and he will help you find one.
Nuwara Eliya
Next, head to Nuwara Eliya, often called “Little England” for its colonial charm and cool climate. This hill station is surrounded by lush tea plantations. Visit a tea factory on the way to learn about the tea-making process and enjoy a freshly brewed cup and a piece of tea cake. For nature lovers, a trek in Horton Plains National Park to see the dramatic cliff drop at World’s End is a highlight.
THE ELLA TRAIN
You have probably already seen videos of this: The train ride from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is one of the most scenic journeys in the world. You’ll pass through rolling hills, waterfalls, and endless tea fields. Once you arrive in Ella, hike up Little Adam’s Peak for panoramic views or cross the iconic Nine Arches Bridge. I also recommend having a breakfast at a hidden gem called Asanka Cafe, where the views of the bridge is unmatched. The town center also has a vibrant café and restaurant scene, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring. They even have a fun nightclub if you have energy for dancing!
Spectacular waterfalls
On your way from Ella to the southern coast, take time to visit some of Sri Lanka’s spectacular waterfalls. Ravana Falls, located near Ella, is one of the most popular stops and offers a chance to cool off in its refreshing pools. Diyaluma Falls, a bit further south, is the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and provides stunning views and natural infinity pools at the top for adventurous travelers.
Safari at Yala National Park
Before heading to the coast, you can also make a stop at Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka's premier wildlife destinations. Famous for its high density of leopards, Yala offers thrilling jeep safaris where you can spot elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and a wide variety of bird species. The park’s diverse landscapes, ranging from dense jungle to open grasslands, provide a stunning backdrop for wildlife enthusiasts. Be sure to book your safari in advance for the best experience.
Hiriketiya
It is time to surf, snorkle and swim! Head south to the coastal village of Hiriketiya. Known for its laid-back vibe and crescent-shaped beach, it’s a haven for surfers and yogis. Try a surf lesson or simply relax on the sand. The area is also dotted with trendy cafés and restaurants serving delicious healthy meals. See all my cafe recommendations in the Google Map link at the end of this post.
Mirissa
A short drive from Hiriketiya, Mirissa offers more stunning beaches and is famous for whale watching. Book a boat tour early in the morning for the chance to see blue whales, dolphins, and other marine life. Parrot Rock, a small viewpoint just off the main beach, is perfect for sunset, and so is Coconut Tree Hill. You can also go snorkeling with turtles at Turtle Beach. Remember, no touching! Mirissa in general also offers incredible restaurants which I of course share in my Google Map link below. Mirissa Beach also has lots of different restaurants that serve fresh seafood, and the lanterns make sure you get a cozy night out. They also take turns throwing beach parties.
Weligama
Just next to Mirissa, Weligama is a haven for beginner surfers. Its gentle waves and wide beach make it an ideal place to learn or improve your surfing skills. Weligama is also home to a variety of boutique accommodations and cozy cafés, offering a relaxed vibe perfect for unwinding. Don’t miss the colorful fishing boats lined up along the shore, which provide a picturesque glimpse into local life.
Ahangama
This area is a paradise for surfers, with consistent waves and a chilled-out atmosphere. Beyond surfing, visit nearby Koggala Lake for a boat ride through mangroves and small islands. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the traditional stilt fishermen in action – it’s a quintessential Sri Lankan experience.
Galle
Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a charming blend of history, culture, and architecture. Wander through its narrow streets, lined with boutique shops and cafés. Highlights include the lighthouse, Dutch Reformed Church, and the old ramparts. It’s a fantastic spot to shop for souvenirs or enjoy a leisurely lunch with ocean views.
Hikkaduwa
If you’re looking for another coastal gem, Hikkaduwa is a fantastic stop. Known for its vibrant coral reefs and lively beach scene, Hikkaduwa offers excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities. You can swim among colorful fish and even spot sea turtles. The area also boasts a range of beach bars and restaurants, making it a great spot to unwind and enjoy the laid-back vibe. I stayed at my Norwegian friend Merete's hotel At Ease, and I highly recommend staying here. It has the perfect quiet location and is still in walking distance to town, and actually ON the beach! (sponsored stay - but honest opinion!)
Colombo
End your journey in Colombo, the bustling capital city. Check out the vibrant Pettah Market, explore the Gangaramaya Temple, and enjoy the nightlife at one of the city’s rooftop bars. Colombo is also a great place to try authentic Sri Lankan dishes and do some last-minute shopping.
LOCAL FOODS YOU HAVE TO TRY
Sri Lanka’s cuisine is as vibrant and diverse as its landscapes. Must-try dishes include:
Rice and curry: A staple meal featuring a variety of curries made with vegetables, fish, or meat.
Hoppers: Bowl-shaped pancakes made from fermented rice flour, often served with coconut sambal and a fried egg.
Kottu Roti: A street food favorite made from chopped roti, vegetables, and meat or eggs, stir-fried with spices.
Pol Sambol: A tangy coconut relish that pairs perfectly with almost anything.
And don’t miss tasting the wide variety of Sri Lankan bananas. From tiny sweet ones to large and creamy varieties, each type has its unique flavor. The orange King Coconut is a must at least once a day to quench your thirst, and the fresh seafood is always a great choice.
BEST TIMES TO VISIT
Sri Lanka’s climate varies depending on the region, but generally, the best times to visit are:
December to March: Ideal for exploring the west and south coasts as well as the hill country.
May to September: Perfect for the east coast, which enjoys sunny weather while the south experiences monsoon rains.
With some planning, you can experience pleasant weather throughout your trip, no matter the season.
TRAVEL TIPS FOR SRI LANKA
Hiring a driver for the first part of your trip is highly recommended. It allows you to explore multiple destinations conveniently, especially in areas where public transport is limited.
The train journey between Nuwara Eliya and Ella is a must-do for its breathtaking scenery. Your driver can continue to Ella and meet you there.
Stay flexible and take time to enjoy each destination. Sri Lanka’s charm lies in its diversity, and every stop on this route has something unique to offer.
